History of Annapurna

Derived from the Sanskrit word, “Anna” means food and “Purna” means filled, Annapurna is a name taken after the Hindu goddess of food and nourishment.

This region has represented Nepal’s natural beauty and adventurous spirit.

Because it is relatively remote and has hard topography, it remained unexplored until 1950.

It was then, that Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal made the first climb of Mount Annapurna I through the north face.

The first summit was done by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal in 1950 through the north face.

Historically, the region was a trade corridor, connecting Nepal and Tibet through Kali Gandaki Gorge.

The traders from Nepal and Tibet exchanged goods as well as culture and religious ideas, blending Hindu and Buddhist traditions

In the present times, conservation and sustainable efforts have been a high priority in the region.
